Whether you are living
in a one bedroom cabin in the mountains, or a five bedroom
home in the suburb, your home is your castle. There
are many different little decorating tips that you can
use to add a sense of the ‘grandeur’ to
your home no matter what the size, and cornice molding
is one of these. You may have never heard of cornice
molding, and if you have you probably associate it with
ancient European structures. However cornice molding
is quickly becoming a popular way of customizing the
look of a home or adding a sense of style and sophistication
to homes today; cornice molding has added functional
uses as well.
For those who have never heard of cornice molding, it
is simply any horizontal decorative molding which wraps
around a frame. Cornice molding can be used to frame
the tops of buildings and doors, or it can be used to
frame a window. Cornice moldings are most often seen
on centuries old stone buildings, and the world ‘cornice’
comes from the Italian language meaning ‘ledge.’
Cornice moldings were once plain frameworks that were
used to keep rain water off the walls of a structure,
and as architecture designs began to improve they were
imbued with elegance and beauty as well.
Cornice moldings can be used on the outside of your
home to protect the walls of your home from rain; when
they are used in this sense the moldings are often incorporated
with outside eaves and gutters. Decorative cornice moldings
around doorways and windows are usually used for decorative
purposes, but they help to protect these structures
from rain water as well. Certainly if you are looking
for an extra special touch to your home you should consider
cornice moldings. They come in a variety of styles,
colors, and shapes, and they are more affordable today
then they ever were thanks to longer lasting modern
materials.
